Homage (2020)

The main themes of this piece refer to my childhood home, my family, and paying homage to them all through found objects and scrap wood that i complied together. At a very young age my family instilled in me that everything can be repurposed or reused for something else. One mans trash is another's reassure and my family has a lot of "Treasures."

Homage takes inspiration from Louise Nevelson's Wooden crate sculptures. I wanted to recreated a vintage style crate that could be found in an antique shop or auction. Each object is symbolic of a family member of mine or the home we share. For example, the puzzle cube symbolizes my aunt's love for puzzles, and rose petals for my grandmothers love of roses. The pecans and rosemary represent the plants growing in our front yard. Items were strategically grouped in 3's to represent my immediate family. (Father, Mother, Myself). To make direct reference to my childhood I attached a newspaper article from when i was 5 to a newspaper 'from the 1880's, then placed it on the backside of the crate.
